Try Walleye

Try Walleye

A Poem by James Paulin
"

Double etheree

"

I

catch my

fresh pan fried

battered walleye.

Fish in Michigan’s

cold water spring fed lakes.

Troll slow with wind, fisherman.

Long lines weighted till rod tip shakes;

bounce rock bottom deep down if you can.

Live bait of minnow, night crawler or leech

Dive lures and wobble spoons kept within reach

Hand tied harnesses with spinners bold

Rods and reels kept in good repair.

Boat has a live well to hold

catches of scaled fare.

Now that I am old,

I take a pair,

to prepare

with care.

Share.

One of the problems with writing formal poetry--especially very restrictive forms--is that the format tends to eat the poem itself. Fortunately, this piece sidesteps that trap. It's good narrative poetry that just happens to be in a certain format, and that's no easy trick.

You make me want to go walleye fishing. Very nice writing, James.
