an old summer songlet

an old summer songlet

A Poem by Everett Dulin

years old incense sticks
burn on the window sill
from a long passed april
next to my memory pad mattress
your afterimage burned in still

i still remember, that fond summer
when the world ended, our laughs and cries
all on that forgotten mattress
under incense smoke
we lived the best of lives

from my stereo in the corner
lover's rock would
narrate the summer's haze
but lovers rock, like summer days
turns long and cold

into my lonesome solo
and that window sill, id watch
for you, to let you inside
became a device of torture
and i still peek through those blinds

i still burn that incense, time to time
so i can sit and cry, like those good times
pretending your solemn imprint,
holding my hand once more
on that mattress, we lived a lifetime
