middernagmaan / midnight moon

middernagmaan / midnight moon

A Poem by Breyten Bach
"

Thoughts on darkness and silence

"

middernagmaan

ek hou van die nag, het ek besluit

toe die halfpensmaan

uit die hemel vir my loer

ek hou van die stilte

en ek hou van die al eenheid

wat die donker bring

soms maak die nag my bang

wanneer honde op wag die boosheid verdryf

of wanneer ek in helder daglig lees

wat die ongenooides van die nag

met niksvermoedenes gepleeg het

of as donderblitse die vensters verlig

en winde vreesanjaende storms bring

maar dis in die donker stiltes van die huis

dat ek my dinke dink

my skrywes skryf

my bidde bid "

in die skrapse lig

van die middernagmaan

...ENGLISH TRANSLATION...

midnight moon

i like the night, i decided

when the half moon

eyed me from the sky

i like the silence

and I like the oneness

that night time brings

sometimes the night scares me

when dogs on duty chase evil away

or when i read in daylight

what the uninvited of the night

committed with the non-expecting

or when thunder lights the widows

and wind bring daunting storms

but it is in the dark silence of the house

that i think my thoughts

that i write my words

that i pray my prayers  "

in the subtle light

of the midnight moon
