Merlot

Merlot

A Poem by Luna Evangeline

Like a  drained bottle,   her soul is empty. To

soothe her singed nerves, only one thing belongs

inside.   In her  nightly dreams,  it  rains, fast

and hard like a mighty thunderstorm. The only

difference? It rains red, the color of young rose

petals. The drops are bitter-sweet, gently wa-

rming her insides as they glide down. It’s the

forbidden drink, the forsaken divinity that dri-

ves her wild with want during the day and in-

fests her thoughts at night. Within herself she

is a barren desert, begging with dying

lungs for one mere ribbon of

scarlet temptation to

bless  her

tortured

 soul.W-

henever

that r-

 osy, bl-

ushing

nectar

trickl-

es do-

wn her

needy

throa-

t, she

is free like a bird released from

her cage, only to realize that she has broken wings.

Author's Note

Luna Evangeline
Note that this is an extremely rough draft and I haven't yet worked out the little spacing kinks. It may not look perfect yet...but hopefully you get the idea of the shape. I also have yet to choose a font. Anyway, thanks for reading.

I'm in love with this. The shape not only reflects the object but also the content. As it goes down her throat the poem narrows at the stem. Wonderfully done. Probably my favorite piece of yours so far.

Seems to be a telling of an alcoholic woman, who in finding the physical pleasure of drink, also discovers her broken soul as she realizes her real problems. Just how it reads to me. I like the wine glass shape! Awesome!

Clever shaping... I'm guessing merlot is a wine, but I don't actually know.

Maybe I'm just a depressing person, but I rather enjoyed the end of this... I suppose people enslaved to certain addictions as the only means of escaping the horrors of life WOULD feel such disappointment upon the completion of said addiction...wonderfully insightful.

Wine is used in one of the holy sacraments, communion, rendering certain wine (primarily diluted with water) consecrated and mildly venerable due to its association with Christ's blood. Because of this, I found your calling it the "forbidden drink" quite ironic from a western perspective...but I know why you
called it such...

Well done!

Thank you! :)
I like the shape of the poem. Hard to get words to fall properly. I like the description and the story in the poem. When we are empty of all emotion. Hard to find reasons to keep going. A strong ending to a excellent poem.
