What is Rock and Roll?A Story by Fe CarhartHere we have a thirteen year old girl (me) explaining what rock and roll is. You're welcome.
Yes, there is a category of music that has been classified as rock and roll. Rock and roll isn't just found in music though, it can be found in almost anything from a movie to a book to a symbol to a rose bush. It's an orgasm, a feeling so intense, so satisfying, so f*****g right and you can't necessarily explain how or why it gets you off. The feeling you get can come from your mind, your heart, or even your crotch, or maybe it plows itself right through you as it comes from the strings of a guitar. Rock and roll is the one thing in life, the one thing that lets you get up and say "F**k my parents", "F**k the system", "F**k you, and you, and you", "I am who I am". It says everything just by having a man angrily screaming yeah and sneering at the establishment. It says everything just by a woman's clothing being taken off on the screen of a theater. It says everything when someone puts a pen to paper and writes every last thing on your mind. It says everything when you are forced to look at art and think about if it means something in your life. It says everything when you plant a rose bush in a place with no flowers. That's what rock and roll is. Rock and roll is not bands like Yes, it is not movies like Yellow Submarine (as much as we all love that movie), it is not in books like The Fault in Our Stars, it is not in a pair of Doc Martens, it is not in a person who does nothing for what they believe in and doesn't work towards anything.
It is bands like the Ramones, movies like Airheads, books like Who I am (by Pete Townshend), wearing something only you wear, working for everything and using your passion and/or money to help others do the same. Rock and roll is never compromising your beliefs no matter how many other people try and change your mind. If you believe there is a God, then believe in that with eveything you have. If you believe there is no God, believe in that with everything you have. If you like girls- like girls. If you like guys- like guys. If you like both- like both. If you're democrat- be democrat. If you're republican- be repulican. If you're bi-partisan- be bi-partisan. Regardless of where you stand, question everything your government tells you. They are not your friends and they do not believe in letting you speak your mind. They do not believe in rock and roll because if everyone was able to feel good on their own, think for themselves, and know their rights, we would overcome them. So go out and get a good education because the smarter you are, the more s**t you'll scare out of the sneaky little pricks. In the end your only friend is rock and roll and te power it gives you to stand for what you believe in and what you know is right. Rock and roll is everything your government is afraid of. It's the will to be weird, it's the remembrance of laughter, it's the will to stick both middle fingers up, the will to play music how you want, and as long as you have that will, rock and roll will never die. So to answer the question "What is rock and roll?", rock and roll can be summed up in one simple, four letter word. The word? Will. Or if you really want, Pete. Pete Townshend is rock and roll and vice versa. There are others that have been said to define what rock and roll is, but Pete Townshend IS rock and roll. A lanky, six foot tall guy with another person growing out of his face, he is innocent but guilty, kind but blunt, ugly but beautiful. He is will. He is the will that writes and explains about confusion of identity, teen angst, alienation, struggle, pop culture, self destruction, rock and roll, adolescence, adulthood, love, plight, desperation, females, males, government, thoughts, words, actions, the afterlife, relationships, music, the whole nine hundred f*****g yards. Pete plays his guitar so hard, so well, so intensely, so f*****g passionately that it is an orgasm. His guitar licks are the biggest "f**k you". They are played while he has both middle fingers up. So again to answer the question "What is rock and roll?" Rock and roll is not just music, it is will... it is Pete Townshend. © 2014 Fe CarhartAuthor's Note
