Between Immensities ( a Villanelle)

Between Immensities ( a Villanelle)

"

A Villanelle

"

Still waters pooling emit reflection

Soothed by summer’s languid caress
Concentric ripples of introspection

Water lilies in saffron perfection
Waxed viridity coalesced
Still waters pooling emit reflection

Rainbow hues coloured in resurrection
Stretched across heaven unsurpassed
Concentric ripples of introspection

Immensities joined by circumspection
Images caught in consciousness
Still waters pooling emit reflection

Deep as the pull of death’s regression
Lulled by infinite transgress
Concentric ripples of introspection

Facing unknown waters of ascension
Descent into the cold abyss
Still waters pooling emit reflection
Concentric ripples of introspection

A Villanelle consists of five tercets and one concluding quatrain (19 lines). There is no specific meter for a Villanelle. However, in class we practiced mixed meter with this form. All "A'a" lines will be written in pentameter (10 syllables per line) and all "b" lines will be written in tetrameter (8 syllables per line).

10-8-10, 10-8-10, 10-8-10, 10-8-10, 10-8-10, 10-8-10-10 .
So, the rhyme scheme that we will be using is:

A1 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)
b -in tetrameter (8 syllables per line)
A2 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)

a - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)
b - in tetrameter (8 syllables per line)
A1 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)

a - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)
b - in tetrameter (8 syllables per line)
A2 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)

a - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)
b - in tetrameter (8 syllables per line)
A1 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)

a - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)
b - in tetrameter (8 syllables per line)
A2 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)

a - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)
b - in tetrameter (8 syllables per line)
A1 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)
A2 - in pentameter (10 syllables per line)

Every "A,a" rhymes with each other and every "b" rhymes with each other. "A1" signifies the first refrain line and "A2" signifies the second refrain line.

Double Moving Refrains: More than one refrain line that changes position in a stanza or stanzas throughout a poem.

Concentrate on having powerful refrain lines as well making sure that they always makes sense no matter all the way through the poem.

Form: Villanelle
Stanzas: five tercets and one concluding quatrain
Double Moving Refrains: A capital letter in any rhyme scheme represents a repeat of the first corresponding line. A number next to a capital letter means that there is more than one refrain line. Thus; in this poem every A1 is the same line and every A2 is the same line. Also, since they are both an "A" they also rhyme with each other as well as every other "a" in the poem.
Rhyme Scheme: A1bA2, abA1, abA2, abA1, abA2, abA1A2
Meter: (there is no specific meter for a villanelle. Multiple meters is allowable and needs to be covered so I am using it on this form.) all refrain lines should be done in pentameter and all "b" lines should be in tetrameter for a count of 10 8 10, 10 8 10, 10 8 10, 10 8 10, 10 8 10, 8 8 10 10

I've never tried one of these myself, but I've read a lot of them and I love this one to death. Sometimes they can feel a bit robotic but you've produced something totally original and beautiful. Love this one :)
