Sudden Death

Sudden Death

A Story by feeliplee

I am especially attracted to the stars tonight. It looks like it is being enveloped in a blanket of black paint, barely visible and vague. The wind cut through the little bits and pieces of what is left in the air, leaving a cool moist wrapped around the bright shining moon. I can feel the wind caressing me, whispering icy breath as it breathes near my curly hair.

As my body coil around the drifting breeze, I look up; shivering. The clouds glide into sight, coating the stars like how one would plaster a scar. The moon edged closer to the vagueness of the night, as if it too, has wounds that need to be shelled from the wind. The blanket is painted no longer in black, but a new color deemed dusk as its darkness found a new parable tonight. The moon is not exposed, concealed behind a façade of evil mists and a slithering fog. The stars are no longer alive, left for dead behind the obscurities of Mother Nature; doomed. It is as though the nebular overwhelmed the insipid moon and diluted the glistening stars in water. The attractive night is slowly fading away. The solitude scares me, enfolding me with a towel that has no sense of security; like a rug wrapped around a rain-ridden boy.

Tonight, the kiss of death is amidst the wind and I can feel the eeriness crawling up behind me, like a vulture that has collided with maggot-infested carcasses.  It is feeding on the fears I’ve boxed up inside me, waiting to burst, like a boiling soup awaiting the bubbles of congestion. Waves of heat creep into my soul through the pores that opens up like a flower in springtime; a flower that will soon fall like the leaves in autumn, withering slowly into lifelessness.

I dare not look above me. The deafening storm light up the night with hints of thunder and gruesome lightning. The lightning is going ballistic, striking the ground near me like a sword. It illuminates the night like a flickering light bulb in an abandoned house. The radiance is invading my sight like an alien on a new-found planet. It was a terrifying scene.

I know I have to evade. I have to escape. I cannot station myself here. I look around for shelter as the rain came pouring down as if the sky is perspiring on me, drenching me with its sweat. I saw nothing and found nothing. The lightning and thunders are like angry dogs, barking at me as it gets angrier and fiercer. Its strike is getting more gradual and it is inching nearer to me. My vision is starting to weaken. My view of things around me is blurry and distorted. As I draw heavier breath, I felt a recurring pain in my chest, as if someone is beating my heart causing it a wrench from the clout. My vision continues to fade and slowly it gave way as I felt my knees weakened and my body collapsed into the dampened grass infested with mud.

Then, there is nothing but quiet. The darkness seeps into my world; stayed there and never left. It consumes me and it will never let go. There will only be darkness now. Like death, there is nothing but shadows.
