The Cause

The Cause

A Poem by Faye Donnelly

Do you remember what the cause is anymore?

My friend, it is not a trend that you follow and watch disappear once the hashtag is no longer “cool.” You do not get to simply repost resources and call yourself an activist. Especially when you let the slurs and taunts roll off your tongue with ease behind closed doors.

And may I remind you that you cannot support one group and shun the next?

You cannot support black people and neglect the LGBTQA+ community.

You cannot support black people and neglect Muslims.

You cannot support black people and neglect Asians.

You cannot support black people and neglect Latinx.

You cannot support black people and neglect Native Americans.

You cannot support black people and neglect the homeless.

You cannot support black people and neglect the disabled.

You cannot support black people and neglect those with mental illnesses.

You cannot support black people and neglect families kept in cages.

You cannot support black people and neglect some women.

You cannot support black people and neglect some men.

You cannot support black people without supporting all people.

It seems that many have forgotten the real cause in this flurry of media and insanity spiraling around us.

Black lives matter. But you do not get to select who you do and do not support. If you do not support all, you do not support one. You neglect intersectionality and ignore the privilege you possess to even choose one or another.

Remember the real cause. It is more than a hashtag you place on a story.

That babies come in all colors mustn't be forgotten either.
