Late night thoughts

I read fantasy
To escape this world
To run away
To a foreign land

A land of magic and adventures
Quests and villains
Good witches and evil kings
Of champions and thieves

I read fantasy
To join a fellowship
Journeying across the lands
Over seas and mountains

I see myself
Meeting dragons and elves
Dwarves and Fae
Assassins and pirates

Who do I want to be?
Am I an evil Queen
Ordering my knights
To slay all dragons?

Am I a righteous king
Sharing my riches
With the citizens
My people

Am I an assassin
Tasked with poisoning the Lords
Armed with a sword and a knife
Slit throats do not phase me

I don't know
Who I am to be
In this land
I can be whomever I want to be

I read fantasy
So that I may leave
The troubles and harshness
Of this world behind

I escape to a land
Where I can cast spells
Heal the wounded
Conjure a spirit

A land where
Trolls speak in different tongues
Where wizards grant me powers
And pixies grant wishes

I ride off
On my stallion
Sword pointed to the heavens
Defeating my king's enemies

I sail across oceans
Joining pirates and princesses
Reading maps and the stars
Trying to find my sea legs

I drink ale
At a bar
Loud chatter lulling me
The barkeep refilling my mug

I fall asleep at an inn
My sword strapped to my hip
Boots all over my bed
Drool running down my chin

I face off against
Demons and monsters
Sharp teeth and poisoned tails
Claws tearing at my skin

I wander the lands
Helping old ladies and children
Invited to homes
For a warm hearty meal

I sleep on the ground
Among tree roots and dirt
The stars as my blanket
And the fire my comfort

I read fantasy
To forget about this world
To leave it all behind
Escape on an adventure

I read fantasy
So my pains aren't real
To remove it with my magic
Transform myself anew

I read fantasy
To not feel pain
So I can be happy
I can live a fantasy
