A Sustainable Pain

A Sustainable Pain

A Story by Fahmida Mehreen

Based on real story.

Have you known what a metabolic disease feels like? Have you grown up with a metabolic disease? I hope not.

Because it is not an easy journey. Needless to say, people suffer through worse. They face terminal illness and spend each passing moment counting their last; last days, last hours, last minutes. Waiting to face death.

But, this is not even so.

You grow up with exaggerating pain. Be it muscle spasm, be it headache, be it fluctuating insulin. You have to spend days in bed, visit hospital innumerable times, and only hear the doctors and nurses say, “Sorry, we cannot help more than this.” The pain relief does not come so easily. Your palms inflate from repeated insertion of cannula . Your nostrils dry up from continuous inhalation of oxygen through nebulizer. Your food pipe gets choked from repeated throwing up, causing blood loss. Nevertheless, this is not the worst part.

You see your family, your close ones, getting frustrated with the illness that has no ailment; and it will not even let you die. It will live with you. You start to grow distaste for your infirmity but you cannot help it. You cannot get rid of it. You hold back the tears and pretend that you are okay. But how can you be, when you have blurred vision, terrible nausea, excruciating pain; and, above all, a lonesome feeling?

We all learn to live with the difficulties as time pass by. As we grow older. But some things remain with us. Good or bad; does not matter. And we better accept it, happily or unhappily. Because there is no escape. Had there been, there would have been one more reason to smile.

To all the healthy souls: Say a little thank you to your Lord for the flawless wealth of a lifetime.

To all the people who are a little less blessed: Tell yourself, “With difficulty, comes ease.”

Have a happy healthy wealthy life. :)

Fact or fiction - tho i sincerely hope the latter, your empathy is very touching and sincere. There's that saying, 'I complained because i hadn't any shoes to wear until i met a man without feet.' We all feel aches and pains at time but, of course there's always someone worse off. Doesnt mean we need ignore minor ills - we don't, we should not. But we do need to understand how awful a severe illness is, day after day, on waking and when trying to get to sleep. You've explained in such a concise way, thank you.. finely written and very informative.

Such an important message here. It really, truly is easy to forget how fortunate we are. We only get one life, and it isn't worth dwelling on the negatives.

Thank you for your kind words. Hope you stay well. :)
I commend you on writing this piece as either you 1. are going through this to know the details of such pain, 2. have a loved one who is struggling with metabolic disease, or 3. have done your research extensively. However, I would recommend being slightly less formal (words like "cannot, this is, you are" as oppose to "can't, it's, you're"). This makes the piece much more personal and less akin to a essay with strict format. Good job, and never stop writing--the world needs literature for every parched soul.

A Metabolic disease is indeed very painful. So many days the sufferer wants to die because of the discomfort and pain.
You are so right. We should be thankful to Him for the gift of health. And as for those who have an infirmity, you have so rightly said the words from the Quran: "with every difficulty, comes ease"
Very nicely expressed.
