The Legacy

So hot

My children stumble on

Caked with red dust, for life we fought

Blistered lips, relentless sun

Distended bellies, drought

Starvation erodes us, consumes us, dismisses, wearing on

Like a sand dune shifted away, pursued, convicted

No water, life evicted

We stalk hope

My family, persists on death’s slippery slope

Scanning for life

Lose hope, lose life

My children will die first

Then my love, whom I loved first

I will bury them, alone

A scattered sprinkling of  bones

Pecked clean, bleached, just lone

No traces of us will exist

But, we live, we persist

We love, deeply

Sweetly, serenely

Drawing my last breath as I must

I want the world to know, as we return to dust

We were part of this world
