Ballad of a Fool who Loves

Ballad of a Fool who Loves

A Poem by Kahtia Howard
"

Written late 2010

"
I fall tranquil to your chestnut eyes.
It's like falling asleep to an open fire;
pits of passion that smoke away the icy layer I've placed
to coat my heart.
They become clear; a window to your soul.
All my bridges I have built
then burn.
The gas gauge to my heart
once empty,
now full.
So eager to teach
but for once I will learn
that my perceptions of you were mere deceptions.
I never believed one could love,
I denied it were true,
that one could love another
as I see you do.
But like tender rain you surround me
and I am nourished.
The soil in my garden
my plants then flourish.
An array of colors for every emotion
so vibrant and tender
like your devotion.
Please hold me tonight as you always do.
Keep me cozy and warm
while I dream of you.
We'll battle dragons and serpents and endless fire
my nightmares are jaded by your desire.
Neither alien nor predator can stand in the way
of my aspirations
of waking to you the very next day.
A light comes forth through stormy clouds,
you reach for me with sun beamed fingers
I've never felt so proud
knowing that your presence lingers.
I awake and rub my tired eyes
blurred vision then comes into focus
and you're still by my side.
I'll hum you a tune
you'll be the note I will hold
to sing through the years
as time turns us old.
You are clay in my hands
though I cannot create you,
you're already a work of art
I cannot display you.
See into me
you might learn something new.
The poisoned word which stings the tongue
when rolled off so carelessly by the young;
Naive or not it may be true
that this poisoned word is meant for you.

Author's Note

Kahtia Howard
I am far from a romantic, and I wrote this before I ever even experienced the feeling of love. I suppose I was trying to understand romantics by putting myself in that mindset. To me it is sappy and silly, which is why I needed to experiment with the thought. In my later poetry, after I could truly understand love, I found that the cliche undertone fades into the words a little more.
