Desolate Rebirth

Desolate Rebirth

A Poem by Jessica

silence, silence, silence
echoes of laughter are absorbed in decaying walls,
walls of protection wrenched from their foundations

salvation dies in its masochistic womb,
a birthplace where delusions leap in shadows,
where hopes scratch at the still standing ceilings,
where love begs for release from its ignorant ascent

but my heart's flickering gaze is still focused on you,
you, with a crescent crumble clouding your vision
in those beautiful, passionately anguished eyes

so although blindsided by the concrete obstruction,
i still grasp through the ruins for your hand
feeling, falling, fading as your fingers latch to another's
another who rejects your palm, your own inarticulate plea

through the silence, there are whispers in the rubble
wishes, tragedies, lies, stunted truths, heartbeats and heartbreaks
unquestioned answers for unanswered questions

how can we overcome an indestructible diamond barrier,
beautiful as ice, but immovable as a mountain?
how can we sprout a bridge across glistening crystal
with only fallen bricks and beheaded beams?

how do we unite destruction and creation,
fire and ice, vengeful polar opposites
and still have something remaining to hold on to?

why can't love be born from agony and sorrow
instead of painful tranquility, silence that forgets to echo?
can i shield you from what is as shining and piercing as glass
if you shelter me with sturdy stone walls and your hand in mine?
