Before you became snow, you were a piece of earth, moist with rain water and sprouting flowers
You were the warmth of a fire heating a lonely woman's palms at dusk
You were the green grass that fed the chirping insects
You swayed in the wind but did not waver with its whispers
And when you were a sweater of cotton, you embraced a body and swept the cold out of reach
You were the five dollar bill relaxing on the sidewalk, waiting to make a young girl's day
You were the generous knife that cut the noose from a neck
A juicy lamb for the starving lion
A blue ribbon to tame hair in a thunderstorm
Sunglasses to guard eyes from the burning rays of the sun
The sacrifice who died to save the life of another
The cooling water that cleansed dirty skin
And when you froze, you could not melt until the winter had passed
You lingered on the trees and sprinkled onto the ground
All of those waiting outside for summer had to endure the bitterness and despair of the snow
