The Kindest Man Who Never Smiles

By: Ethan West

I sit alone in barren bow

I stand with all, but all the while

Mine is the bitter tainted brow

The kindest man who never smiles

And as I lift, and strain and pull

My heart, in heart, is truly vile

My act shall act, and cover full

The kindest man that never smiles

My passion comes from those around

And those around I do defile

I watch them fall into the ground

Watched them fall behind my smile

And in ambition, I'm all but lost

The taint of hate like boiled bile

My stretching soul has paid the cost

My stretching lips have lost my smile

They told me once that I had hope

They told me when I was a child

That I could climb the steepest slope

The kindest man could find his smile

They told me once to make my mark

They told me to be worth their while

They told me in a voice so dark

The kindest man would loose his smile

I set out strong to prove them wrong

Full of rage, my fury riled

That they would hear my battle song

The kindest man has lost his smile

And now I'm barren, hurt and poor

And now I'm humbled and exiled

From success's grandest door

I am not kind, I do not smile

I watch the workless keep their fate

Doing nothing all the while

My efforts lost in blinding hate

I am the man who lost his smile

Hit a low spot and this is what came out. Not my best work but all my efforts have been focused on my book. Hope you like it!

You may not have viewed this as your best but this was a very good piece. The narrators story was able to be followed and understood. It seems that as the narrator went through life, like most of us, the hardships and negativity of those around us weighed heavily on us. Reality has the best way of bringing us down and taking our joy. But even at our low moments everything is not all bad. Very good poem.

oh my, this was very thought provoking and deep indeed. It very much reveals how the world can tear down the joy and innocent hope we have as children. The last line seems to echo even after the reader has finished. Very well done!

Very nicely done. Completely brings out the truth of life. So many things to do in our life, so many failures and disappointments. A truth of how faith and hope is lost to so many and a smile is but a distant memory.

It was a great piece. I could really feel the emotions and the kind of sadness that came with it. Great job!

I think its good. A little bit vague for me but overall the emotion was 100% there and mental state was clearly visible

I love the flow, and I'm a sucker for repetition, which is flawless here...I would kill for one of these low spots right about now haha

I'm also stuck in my books so I haven't posted any poem for awhile. Shucks, dude, it's actually great to see that you've created a poem while in the midst of concentration.Great job and I hope you progress with that book of yours (:
