Fear the Dark?A Story by EW BradfuteEver try to toy with peoples senses or even get into their mind? This was an experiment of doing just that. What do you think? Why do people fear the dark? Is it because it is the world of the unknown? Why is it we struggle to find a light when we get out of bed in the middle of the night even though we can walk our house blindfolded? It is these questions that have us thinking, what does linger in the darkness?
Picture yourself waking in the middle of the night, complete and utter darkness fills the room as usual. A sound startles you as it arises in the vast void that sits at the edge of your bed. A complete darkness that holds the usual contents of your room, but this noise has your heart racing. It is unfamiliar to you as it reached into your peaceful slumber and yanked you into this blackened emptiness.
Familiar with your surroundings you sit up on the edge of your bed, slowly clearing that groggy sleep that hovers over you. One by one you slide each slipper on as you know without a doubt they lay waiting to hug your feet once again.
Finally, you rise up and make your way to the end of your bed, your destination, the light switch. As you reach those two steps and feel the end of your bed on your leg a growl sounds out. You know you don’t have a dog so you question yourself is it the house settling or is there something waiting for you to draw closer? Your heart races as this uneasy, unsettling feeling fills your body down to the hairs that stand firmly on your arms now.
You take a few more steps with hopes that you don’t find an unwanted guest. Could it be a burglar that crept into your comfortable home? Is he making himself at home to your possessions or is he waiting to take that most valuable item to you, your life? Your mind ventures off into thoughts of who it could be or their diabolical plans. A chill fills your body as you shutter at the thoughts that your childhood nightmares could be coming true as you stand in the unknown. Could Pennywise be waiting for you to light up his face with those razor sharp teeth and a balloon in his hand? Do they really all float?
You shake yourself back into reality as a moan now confirms your worst thoughts someone else is in the dark void with you. You find yourself facing two options, one, run back to the bed and bury yourself in the covers or two, get those lights on and confront your mystery lurker. Even though the thoughts of running back to your covers sound great, you choose to brave the darkness and show no fear.
You stretch your arm out desperately hoping to find the light switch but you find empty air. You know it is there just one more step and you find your hand touching something warm, soft, and slimy. A gagging feeling starts to creep up on you as it begins in your stomach and comes to your throat. You hold it down and hope that this is all just a bad dream, but you know you have to still get the light on. With slime on one hand you reach out with the other and find the switch as another hand settles on your hand. Do you withdraw or do you get the light on?
With every ounce of bravery you get the light on and find yourself face to face with…
Your loved one, they had sneezed and desperately fought to find the light switch in hopes to get a tissue. The snot sits under their nose and is running to their chin. It hits you that slime on your hand is their snot.
