Protesting the Legacy of Pat RobertsonA Poem by Evyn RubinRev Pat Robertson (1930-2023) was a religious figure who organized in the political arena, and I am one of his many grassroots opponents. Here I tackle some of his problematic politics.
Protesting the Legacy of Pat Robertson
Only God can truly judge a person’s soul, but mortals can judge words and deeds I harshly judge several features in the legacy of Pat Robertson: his abandonment of common sense and reason in the area of causality, that he could not factor in human impact or secular science to explain causation but always applied
his pre-existing paradigm of divine punishment and apocalyptic “prophesy,” claiming hurricanes were America’s punishment for feminism, abortion, gay rights -- claiming that destruction and suffering were “signs of the times,” and claiming the ghastly predictions in the book of Revelation are inevitable
but leaving inquiring minds wiggle room to take Revelation’s depressed assertions literally or metaphorically, that is their choice, quoting that blood will flow in Jerusalem up to the horses’ knees, whether that should be taken literally or metaphorically -- Pat Robertson gives you that pseudo-choice within the frame of divine will unfolding
Pat Robertson no longer walks on the planet, but his faulty legacy still lingers warranting continued disempowerment through criticism and creative means.
