Lincoln and Juarez [part 1]

A Poem by Evyn Rubin

"

Lincoln and Juarez

contemporaneously

both were presidents

One from the U.S.

the other from Mexico

Lincoln and Juarez

Juarez and Lincoln

for the purpose of study

they pair up quite well

Lincoln and Juarez

both were associated

with a big issue

Slavery and land

one to abolish and one

to redistribute

It fell to Lincoln

to end chattel slavery

of Blacks in the south

Desperate peasants

called upon Juarez to help

more land to grow food

Nobles and the church

were owners of vast land tracts

Juarez chose land reform

Lincoln freed the slaves

Jaurez redistributed

land to the peasants

He could have done more

was said about both of them

for slaves for peasants

They could have done more

often said of refomers

their limits perceived
