Chapter One- Introduction to the Island of K.L

K.L, the newfound island 400 miles west of New Zealand, the locals still believed that K.L had turned up over night, scientists had a theory that global warming had caused a new island to appear from the sea bed. Whatever happened half a century before this was her home. As the plane circled the mini runway below she could see just how her little town, Jarantix, had grown in the 2 years she had left. She knew they had built a cellphone tower only 63 days ago as Jamie had been calling her every day since, sometimes calling her just to let her know that the cellphone tower was still working.

She stood on the porch looking towards the rolling hills, it felt like a long time since she had explored those hills beyond her parents home.  No more imagining from her uni dorm staring at her blank ceiling.  She was free to explore while her parents travelled around Asia. It was freeing to know she had two weeks completely to herself, minus the audition she had promised to attend. She started down the garden path, never having been much of a gardener herself, her mother always said “A beautiful begonia can fill your heart with love and joy”. She looked up to the cloudless sky and agreed momentarily with her mothers outburst.  She crossed the two large fields, patting the munching cow on the rump as she climbed the fence and splashed through the river bed to look up at the dense forest. She had ‘crossed the ditch’ to attend Milian School of Arts and never yet had she seen another forest as bright and vibrant as this one was. There was a slightly similar one in Central Africa that she had flicked past why studying in the University library a month ago, the sight of which had made her yearn for a visit to her home, with her assignments well up to date she had taken the opportunity only to find her parents leaving the same day for their holiday to Asia. She clapped her hands together in frustration, if only she had listened when her mum had called her a fortnight before then she could have postponed her trip here. She had decided to take advantage of the well-needed holiday to clear her head for the oncoming exam period at Milian. Here she was, staring up at the ferns spreading out above her head, she looked at the sun and decided to put a bit more speed onto the casual pace she was keeping to. She knew which part of the forest she was looking for, and although it had been a while, her feet navigated like second nature through the windy vine ridden path. She had walked there most days since she was very little to practice her dancing and singing without the ‘long winded compliments from her overbearing parents’ or ‘the embarrassing laughter from her school friends’. She had worked hard during music class to force an ability to louden her vocal chords from the soft voice she had been used to, but out here in the forest everything seemed louder and more beautiful. Heightening every sense so it almost made music sound like pure love and joy, with no begonias included. She breathed in as she down the rocky path onto the soft heavenly grass that she had never fully appreciated. She slipped her ballet slippers on quietly and stood still as she let her toes dive in to the luscious sweet soil, the sun was up and she had hours to wonder through the forest depths, She smiled and began to hum.

“You’re late!” Jamie made his point by shoving his finger towards her waving it vigorously, “I told you on the phone that you had changed into some Narcissistic Diva.” Summer bowed, curtseyed then ran up to Jamie grabbing him round his middle “Jamie Donovan! How dare you imply I have changed and I prefer Your Majesty, none of that Diva crap!” She looked up at his great blue eyes with an expert apologetic glance and he smiled, “Well you’re here now, they’re waiting inside, they even set up a few desks to make it look official.” Summer gasped “Desks! That’s even more expensive than last seasons set budget. What’s K.L coming to?” Jamie glanced at her “It’s not that, its what’s coming to K.L. Some huge star that grew up here said she might pop in to help out for this year’s production.” Summer pulled her head up with a confident stance “Well you better announce me then.” She ripped herself out of the hug, slapped his a*s then ran of towards the studio.

He had never understood flirty behaviour between the mortals, although they seemed to enjoy it thoroughly, it seemed so tedious. He had watched Summer acting like a flirty mule for the last five minutes with a boy from town and he was already starting to regret his decision to come. He wasn’t nervous about the audition, his mother had spent the last few nights perfecting his voice. It was Summer he felt worrying him, Summer who he had done everything for, defied his dad, his brothers, his... but he couldn’t think of that now. His mother had told him to do everything to make himself happy but he knew she was scared. He entered the studio before he had time to run.... back.

She saw him before he had turned around. She had seen boys before, there were plenty of them at university not to mention her darling friend, Jamie, but none that had made an impression on her. This threw her and she wished she had dressed more Hollywood and less K.L style, dull jeans, a pink tank top from years before and her hair swished into a bun. She hadn’t bothered accessorising so it didn’t distract from her audition, the first lesson she had learnt at Milian. This guy knew how to dress though, a tailored suit jacket running through to his diamond wrist cuffs, the slight flare to his black dress pants. But as he walked closer.... that face, carved to perfection, smooth, fare and a few of his curls from his golden locks covering a set of large Hazel eyes.

“Summer Taylor? Can you come in please?” a voice trailed through the door, Rhonda had become much more uptight since she had left, most likely due to the fact that she saw Summer’s success as her own. Summer was living her dream thanks to a scholarship from Milian, although Rhonda was only a few years older than her, Jarantix High didn’t offer drama classes until Summer’s year.

It appears as though you had trouble with the format system also. It was hard to read because of the lack of paragraph indentions or separation, but the story line sounds good. You got into the characters quickly and I liked that. As a rough draft I can see it developing beautifully.
