The Team: Chapter 4

A Chapter by Eva Sirois

I smiled softly as I fed it some seeds. The chipmunk stuffed them in his cheek pouches. It bulged out, making me laugh.

A rock appeared, thrust at the chipmunk. The chipmunk squeaked and fled. I turned to see a bunch of juniors standing behind me. “Hey!” I cried without thinking.

The juniors laugh. “Oh, sorry, were you playing with it?” they cried mockingly.

I shrank back, which encouraged the juniors even more. It was lunch period, and so everyone was either inside or outside, and everyone encouraged the juniors on. Even some of the others joined in, taunting me.

Tears came to my eyes at some of the insults. I looked around, and saw Cy, a junior. He was standing just inside the doorway, watching everything with a cool look. I stared at him, and he stared back, and I uttered a silent plea for him to help me. He gave me a long look, wrote something in his notebook, then turned and walked away.

I closed my eyes, and the gibes consumed me.

   “Freak!”

   “Pascifist!”

“Where the hell did your mother find you? Under a rock?”

   Sobbing, I fled.
