Maui

Maui

A Poem by Ella Emergency
"

This is me being completely vulnerable. I have issues with calling a place home... so this was a big step for me.

"

My heart into the wind, now I'm light as a feather.

My arms stretched out - I'm ready to be pushed

Like a jellyfish in the ocean to warmer waters.

     Effortlessly. Floating. Along.

I am a sail boat.

I am a sandwich at the beach.

The sun. On my shoulders.

Crashing waves in my ears.

I never thought I'd call it home.

But here it is. It's where I'm from.

Snow melts and freezes into ice on my memory.

It was like God on the perfect days.

Some mornings I still wake up,

Thinking I dreamed up this island far away.

Because my reality says

I graduated from A West,

With my cousin who is my sister.

And my aunt who is my mom

Becomes a symbol of the life I was supposed to lead.

But there will always be sand in my hair.

And there will always be blue, sparkling ocean in my heart.

And there will always be sun on my back.

Home is looking over the valley,

Orange sky, Endless water.

Maui.
