With Love, GatsbyA Poem by ErykA free verse poem using quotes from Fitzgeralds's "The Great Gatsby" to express the love I believe he felt.
I once felt you were like Gatsby.
I thought your eyes and lips were only meant for me. I thought you saw the forever flashing green light in my eyes, stretching across the bay, through our souls across time. Only to realize it was a reflection, against that water. It was I who saw the green light, the potential orgastic future that over time receded before us. I said tomorrow I'll run faster, stretch out further and beat on, boats against the current in that bay. I keep telling myself my life has to be like this, its got to keep going up for her. Finally, I see I'm reaching and fighting for the unattainable past. I find refuge in my memories, how I looked upon your face as every woman wants to be looked at, and secured your heart. And in return, how I breathed in beautiful dreams like air. You will always be my Daisy, but Fitzgerald had one thing wrong. I'll always be the fool, the man fighting hopelessly for the love that is the beginning and end of everything.
