Just Now

Just Now

A Poem by Ether Words

You know how the landlord said,

"if the waterheater is broken

I'll turn it up

but call if nothing changes."

I have been taking the coldest

showers of my life, day after

day just to

be soft and clean for you.

And the sunrise has been both

tiresome grey and hopeful yellow

like it was all

along, I just notice it now.

But now I ask, "What if I fall

in love with you? The way

you tilt your

head when nobody is watching?"

And you are a jumble of lines.

static in my heart like always

when a hand

turns my mind the other way.

To a sunrise I don't feel part of

to colors like crimson and pink

an undefined mango

that I can't pretend to love just now.
