The Waiter At The Greek Restaurant

The Waiter At The Greek Restaurant

A Poem by Ethan Boroian

There is a man that works at a Greek restaurant,

                                                                               Not far from my house,

This man is kind, caring and generous,

Yet has the presence of a mouse….

His skin is dark and his teeth are yellow,

But I like him all the same,

Not because of the food he serves,

But because he always remembers my name….

I’ve never seen such a hard worker,

And I admire him, I truly do,

Not only for putting up with the weekend rush,

But for being courteous and always smiling too…

And last night at the restaurant,

When I was feeling glum,

He was nice enough to take interest,

And asked “is everything alright son?”

I told him my predicaments,

Which explained my frustration,

And somehow he made me forget about them,

With the power of a conversation…

I thought that I could go talk to him,

Whenever troubles arose,

And this worked out perfectly,

Until the restaurant closed…

Such fun here with a touch of warmth and simplicity. Great wee poem. Thanks.

Ah...such is life.
So elusive those things we hold dear.
I can relate to this having been exposed to the mind numbing work in food service.
A manager will do anything to retain an employee who is of the above caliber, for reasons eloquently laid out in this poem.
Nice work.

Written like a true humanitarian.. This is a wonderful "slice of life" and the telling is rich in kindness, compassion, humanity. I look forward to reading some more of your work. We have similar styles, yet I have not gone the poem route yet. (Mine "Red Gloves of Love") Very nicely written..

I like the almost musical touch to this - guess its the distinct meter; plus, it has a wit about it which isn't found in many poems these days! ' His skin is dark and his teeth are yellow, ~ But I like him all the same, ~ Not because of the food he serves, ~ But because he always remembers my name. '

People are fascinating, aren't they, especially if they go with food - maybe you like them as much as eating! Plus,
the wonderful thing about Greek restaurants is that they stay open until the last customer leaves!

Thanks lots for sharing.

I think this is great, I love to take notice of people , I believe too many people isolate themselves and would not even notice a waiter's kindness , or even regognize them as someone who could be a friend .. this is a poem about someone..paying attention .. good work

I have no idea about rhythm or rhymes or the lot, but I though, after I had read, that I should like to meet nice Greek waiter. Is writing not about transportation?

i think the idea of the poem is very very good, but I agree with the other review about the ryme, it can be a dangerous thing. Regardless, the epicenter of the poem is good, the idea behind is great and you should keep on writing.

Sometimes, rhyme is a very good thing...but it can also force your ideas into an ill-fitting box. I don't think a rhyme scheme serves you well here; it leads to lines such as "But I like him all the same", which really don't pack any punch or bring any depth or texture to the piece. I think there is the potential for a very good piece in here, but, as it stands, it's trapped in a rhyme that is only there for rhyme's sake.
