Earnest and BenA Poem by Ethan Boroian
Every morning I pass a building, at the top of my road, Some call it a pre-death experience, others a retirement home, I’m told there were two men, who were the best of friends, One of them was named Earnest, and the other was called Ben, They met each other in high school, and lived on the same street, They were each others best men, and went together on golf retreats, They both had families, with kids and a dog, the whole shebang, They went to church every Sunday, and in the gospel they both sang… Now old and retired, in each others company they never get depressed, That is until the day that Earnest went into cardiac arrest, Earnest passed away and on his tombstone it read, “I had sex with your wife, and didn’t know how to tell you Ben”, Ben who was hurt, suspected his wife of committing adultery, But never suspected Earnest, he was as loyal as Ben wanted to be, It was then that Ben realized, that him and Earnest were just the same, And when Ben passed away, he was buried next to his best friends grave, And on Ben’s tombstone, was a short reply, It said, “It pains me to tell you Earnest, but your second kids mine…” © 2009 Ethan BoroianReviews
