Mask

Mask

A Poem by Falon Quirke

I try to hide behind a mask

Is it too much to ask

That I am safe from the judgment

The trials and tribulations

The many accusations

My life isn’t all it seems

What once was a simple disguise

Soon became the key to my demise

My armor, my protection

The barrier from the rest of the world

Should I ever be unmasked

Should I ever be stripped of my armor

The light of truth finally dawning

Surely then, it’d be over

The lies, the deceit, the hurt would be gone

But then would come the loneliness

But how could it be worse than right here

Right now

You say, ‘It’s okay’

‘I don’t have to cry again’

But how would you know

What I’ve been through

Put yourself in my shoes

Come behind my mask

My armor, my protection

The barrier from the rest of the world

Then you’ll see that because of you

My barrier, my armor, my protection

My mask

Just isn’t strong enough
