Memory Lane

Memory Lane

A Poem by Ethan Talby

I live my life as a Peter Pan
No father to teach me how to be a man
Sister left, she had a better plan
No friends around to give me a hand
Mornings were early and nights were late
Birthdays involved a large cake and a lone plate
No time for emotions; no joy, no hate
Life's only message was work hard and concentrate
Yet I had to watch others play
So everyday
I sat and pray
That things wouldn't be gray
I learned to love the rain
Cause we were the same
In that people thought we were lame
Come now, follow me down memory lane

I'd spend my time alone at school
Teachers who taught me were cool
Stayed quiet and obedient to their rules
Even when they'd call me a young fool
Kids would laugh at me from a distance
And that would give me some existence
Talking with others was a rare instance
But they were scared when I showed no resistance
When I told them everything
About me and my skinny jeans
I tried escaping routine
By changing my script and scene
My life wasn't so plain
Though I did train
To become insane
Come now, follow me down memory lane

As I started to slow down
I looked around
And saw the frowns
That screwed me in the ground
But this is what I asked
Helping others is what I've been tasked
Show my trust and become unmasked
But with no armor I feel attacked
So I stay strong
For my past has gone
Carrying along
As my path goes on
My life has been full of pain
But I would refrain
From making a change
Come now, follow me down memory lane
