      Dreams and Dragonflies
Thrice upon a time…
Many centuries ago in the land of Tyr, god of the northern sky, triplets were born to the wind sprite Aurora.  Never before had this happened in the kingdom of the North winds. Three daughters were born that night, the oldest named for her mother. The middle child’s name was derived from their Uncle Borak, whose name means lightning. They called her Bori. The biggest surprise of all, the last child, was named for her grandmother Alice, who surprises the world with the first frost of winter every year.
Their mother Aurora was the north wind sprite, their aunts the south, east, and west winds. Their mother’s laugh would bring a cool wind from the farthest reaches of the North Pole, and also make it snow. When she sang, it would make the leaves turn an assortment of vibrant colors and bring fall to the land.
The daughters of Aurora grew, as did the expectations of the many sprites in the northern kingdom. Sprites do not get their wings until six winters pass. By their seventh winter the triplet’s mother feared something was wrong. Each of her three daughters wings were quite different. Aurora Jr. had a single large left wing. Bori the middle daughter, had just two small wings that seemed would never grow any larger. Alice like Aurora also had just one large wing, but on the right side. When the girls would hang their heads, ashamed of their misshapen wings, their mother would hug them and tell them, they were all unique and beautiful in their own special way.
The daughters of Aurora were ridiculed by the other young sprites their age because they could not fly. The sprites of spring were especially cruel. They thought they were better than other sprites because they brought flowers and life back to the forest each spring. They especially hated young Alice because her grandmother would frost and wilt  their beautiful flowers when they became too conceited by their spring display.
For the triplets eighth birthday, their Uncle Borak brought them a special gift. They each received a single box riddled with holes on all sides. Inside each of their boxes was a dragonfly no larger than the size of their palm. “These are no ordinary dragonflies, what you hold are magnificent bits of magic,” he told them. “Just say the phrase ‘Colossus Antisoptera’ and they become large enough on which to fly,” said Borak. “Go ahead and try it,” he urged.
The girls recited the mystical phrase “Colossus Anisoptera” and the dragonflies grew to the size of a grown man. Each girl gasped in amazement and with their mother’s permission, they climbed on the strong backs of the dragonflies.
Their mother warned them “Stay together, for alone you are vulnerable, but together you are invincible.”
The dragonflies immediately sprang into action wings flapping at an incredible rate and whoosh they were off into the sky. They flew over the mountains of the kingdom of Tyr to the waterfall that fed the rushing river where the mermaids played.
They flew just a few feet off the water, dragonfly style and the mermaids trailed behind them jumping from the water and laughing at their sport.
They flew far and wide relishing in the newfound freedom of flight. Aurora led the way past the giant mushroom where the spring sprites slept.  The drone of the dragonflies’ great wings awoke the lazy sprites. Angry at being awakened, the spring sprites took out after the triplets to punish them for disturbing their nap. They began to weave in and out of the girls, taunting and mocking them for their need of magical bugs on which to fly. One especially mean sprite named Prima Vera flew up and pulled Bori’s hair. The startled girl lost her grip and slid right off the back of her dragonfly. Prima Vera and the other spring sprites scattered fearing the wrath of the great sky god and the triplet’s mother.
Aurora and Alice sped to Bori’s rescue reaching out their hands to their falling sister. Just as Bori grasped hold of her two siblings hands, her extra weight thrust suddenly upon them pulled Aurora and Alice from the backs of their dragonflies.  All three sisters hand in hand were falling to what they feared was certain doom. Alice called out for their mother, Aurora feared the worst but Bori remembered their mother’s words.
“Together we are invincible,” she hollered to her two sisters on either side and she began to flap her small wings with all her might. The other two also began to flap their wings. Aurora on the left with her large left wing, Bori in the middle with her two small wings, and Alice on the right with her large right wing. All of them worked together like one giant butterfly. “It’s working!” Aurora exclaimed, “We’re flying,” cried Alice. “Does anyone know how to land?” said Bori excitedly.
A sudden silence fell across the girls, but then they noticed one of the dragonflies heading back towards the water where the mermaids lived. They watched it slow down and then gently come to rest on the water. “It makes landing seem easy,” said Aurora. “Well maybe it is” said Bori. “It’s worth a try and, even if we mess it up at least we will be hitting water and not the hard ground,” said Alice.
The other two dragonflies appeared on either side as if to guide them in for a landing. The triplets followed the dragonflies and mimicked their every move. Like a gaggle of winter geese they landed gently in the brilliant blue water. The excitement of success ended quickly however as the girls began to sink. As they descend below the surface of the water the mermaids grabbed hold of them and brought them swiftly to shore. The mermaids suggested that they go and practice their landing in the soft moss beneath the slender sequoias. Aurora, Bori, and Alice thanked the mermaids for their kindness and suggestion and took off hand in hand with their dragonflies flying below.
The moss was not quite as soft as the mermaids had led them to believe. Many times while practicing they skidded and fell, rolled to a stop, or just plain crashed in a heap. They kept trying though until finally, although not the most graceful display, they got it right. After a few more successful landings, they headed for home, bruised and scraped with moss in their hair and joy in their hearts.
Back home their mother had been pacing franticly worried about her daughters. She heard the sound of wings beating in the wind and saw the three dragonflies coming in alone.  Just as her heart sank, she looked up and saw a strange glow in the northern sky. As the radiant light moved closer she heard laughter, the laughter of her three cherished daughters. Flying hand in hand Aurora, Bori, and Alice came into view. Together they were whole their mother realized. Working together they had achieved the impossible.  And still to this very day, they can be seen flying together in the night sky creating the shining northern lights known to the world as the Aurora borealis.  Magic is always possible with determination, dreams and dragonflies.
