Clint Eastwood AnalysisA Story by JayParamoA lyrical analysis of Gorillaz's hit "Clint Eastwood"
I was listening to Gorillaz the other day (which is pretty much every day) and it got me thinking about the hook for Clint Eastwood. Now, if you're not a Gorillaz listener, it's:
"I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad I got sunshine, in a bag I'm useless, but not for long. The future is coming on" I interpreted this into a physical form and thought "What could be sunshine in a bag when I ain't happy, but feeling glad? I'm useless, what could make me happy?" And then it hit. The narrator is planning on suicide. The "sunshine" could be one of many things. A firearm to press against your skull and redecorate your wall with a new shade of crimson and pink. A rope, to hang like a rotting chandelier. Pills to make all your imperfections fade away. The narrator feels as if they can do nothing right. They went out and bought some form of device to kill themselves with, and that's what the "future" is. Death. Taking this further, does this have another meaning? The sunshine could still be a gun. The narrator may hate his/her high school and plans on filling up a few students with holes. The narrator may be a soon to be serial killer, the sunshine being tools necessary to make clean murders. Or it could be a pair of rosary beads. I'm definitely not a religious man, but the narrator could be. The narrator could be turning to God and the "sunshine" could be a crucifix so he can pray for his life to get better. The sunshine could be an instrument, and they'll be starting a musical career because they feel "useless" doing whatever they were previously doing. Or, the bag may even be metaphorical! The narrator could be referring to his arm/hand as a bag and be bringing home a girl to show her around, possibly move in with her and start a new life! © 2013 JayParamoAuthor's Note
