Don'ts

Don'ts

A Poem by Erin Lee

'Etheree' consists of 10 lines of ascending syllable counts (1 syllable - 10 syllables) or a 'Double etheree', having 20 lines, with the 11th to 20th lines having descending syllable counts. Not necessarily rhymed. Here's an example of a normal etheree:

Don’ts

By Erin L George

They

say you

shouldn’t start

with and. And you

must show, not say it -

dodging needy cliché.

Dance round with words, anyway

but never trip on lazy verb

(sure to drag fat feet while tangoing).

Be leery when soft pronouns beg to court:

“Pick me, pick me!” Unsophisticated

Little squirt. He, she, them, want to play

Clumsy upon your notebook page

Don’t tell yourself you’re no good;

No one would want to read

Work misunderstood.

Last of all, don’t

Ever ask

Who are

They?

A love for haiku poetry developed during world literature studies, inspired by its power to express deep ideas in just a few syllables. The book Blue Harlequin features many of these moments, celebrating the simple beauty of life.
