State of MindA Poem by Erin LeeThis poem was written after major debate and discussion with a black friend of mine who insists on propetuating sterotypes, racism, and hatred against his own race. Sad.State of Mind I'm white and I never used the word. It was the one time my father hit my brother in the face, open-handed. He told him, "You just don't use that word!" He scorned him for not knowing: "That all men," he said, "Were created equal." You're black and you tell me brothers, from your neighborhood, are n*****s - despite my protests for a kinder word. You tell me, "N****r is a way of life." You mock me for not knowing: "All blacks," you say, "Use the n****r word." You tell me n****r is not a color - it's how a person acts. You're not a n****r, because you hold a job, don't beat your woman, raise your own child. Yet you teach your children to use the word. I'm white and I never used the word before I met you. So now, I tell you, "N****r is a state of mind." © 2010 Erin LeeReviews
