Power Outage

by Erin L George

There wasn't enough light:

So dark, we had to squint

in ways grandmother would warn

will make you blind.

But that didn't stop us

from eating steak in bed

and dining on each other's kisses.

The world swirled around us

trees falling to the ground

blocking the roadways

the night Hampton Beach burned down.

But it didn't change a thing -

as we woke to a fire alarm

and cotton candy dreams.

We pulled the covers tight

looking out the window

wondering if we should get dressed

and join the others,

outside and chilled to the bone.

Instead, you lit the pipe

and we ate each other's lips.

They say we should be ashambed

the night that people died.

But people, we explained,

die each and every night.

There wasn't enough light

to see each other's scars.

The world cried around us

as we pissed off the Gods

jumping in the ocean's wrath

spinning on our love.

That's what besties do,

making history -

that night we slept

while others bled

that night we spred the seed.

Tell me,

is happiness so bad?
