A Wish I Made on a Dandelion

Erin L George

I blew on a dandelion

(and I'm allergic to them)

but what's a runny nose

for a wish to God's ears?

I blew on a dandelion

and took the tubes from his mouth

I tied them round my ankle

and glued daisies to them.

I blew so hard it lost its whiskers

and I felt bad for it

its bald head exposed to snow -

dandelions are summer flowers.

My eyes opened hard

sleep falling from them,

realizing I was in dreamland

and dandelions are covered now.

I'd go to the backyard and dig

through snowmen

dog s**t

and glassy ice to find one.

I'd blow so hard on that snow

my breath hot enough to melt it

if I knew it'd be there -

my dandelion to wish on.

Could I blow the breath into him?

Letting it spill from my lungs

sour on the taste of nicotine

but sweet on intention?

I made a wish on a dandelion

but it was only on my dreams.

Do dandelion wishes count

in wintertime, covered by snow?

Someone told me once:

"Dandelions never die."

Hmmm. Is this a little snippet of the book? This is powerful.
