digging for some pleasant memories

digging for some pleasant memories

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

digging for some pleasant memories

i am an earthworm

crawling into your peripheral

either to get your attention

or avoid it

i move slowly enough

to creep closer

but not fast enough

to escape your wrath

the ground between us

is moist

once fertile from love,

now it is from years of tears

i might be fishing for forgiveness

or just swimming in the mud

of my confusion

no eyes to see the reasons

our days together

are just a slow pain

waiting to be struck

by the mouth of understanding.

the tragedy of the earthworm is that it doesn't undergo some magical transformation unlike the caterpillar, for example, which, of course, turns into a butterfly. but, maybe the earthworm can transform and sublimate (in a sense) the very dirt it eats and eats endlessly, making it more fertile. what a useful creature it is after all!

the real earthworm, useful. what the earthworm represents not so much.
Thanks for your review.. read more
When it's over it's over, but sometimes it's not. The speaker here continues to dig like an earthworm to hold on to something that was good for a while, but then went really sour. There appears to be hope of a revival, but I'd say there's a lot more digging ahead.

Thank you for your words, John,
j.
On my way to read a different work of yours, I saw this.
It really affected my heart, J.
I think we ignore some very important things, and people,
although not intentionally.
Maybe that earthworm needs to put a bug in the ear of its desire.

The second verse alone strikes WAY too deep into me. You have a remarkable way with words. ~Jim
