Paper Chase

Paper Chase

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Paper Chase

bad heart

boozing ticker

a flicker of past

two more sups

of black-out bourbon

the stairs wait

the bottom is

a brazen journey

he empties his life

on the way down

tastes his internal conflict

at the basement of his fears

the bottle breaks

he reflects in the shards

he should have written

just one last poem

before that

one last drink

before that

one last fall.

This is fantastic. The last lines hold a poem in isolation and the journey to those lines just adds to the story. Great work

Thank you for your kind words, John.

And I was, just today, thinking about purchasing my first bottle of bourbon.

Thanks for the great poetry, it was a good teacher and kind of funny, too.

ETERNITY

Always my pleasure, J
This one is intense. The language is vivid and raw, and it feels like he is unraveling before our eyes. The imagery of tasting internal conflict and reflecting in the shards of broken glass is especially strong and powerful.
