A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

footnote to Up with apology to Ginsberg

I howl at the wind

I howl at the distance

between my window

and the ground

and the howling wind

laughs at my gaffs

as I slip into a skyscraper coma

falling asleep in unkempt dreams

howling at fractured moonbeams

lying dead on that ground floor

now I lie as an imprint

on the concrete walk of fame---

in a pool of shame

Someone just closed the window

and drew my drapes

of wrath---

Thank you for your kind words, Thomas,

I guess howling at the wind, moon, sky is something we all do behind closed drapes (love the wrath bit). It gives writers grist for the mill and civilians relief, or at least exhaustion and unrestful sleep, to get up and howl another day. ...You've write-fully captured the Howl, Jacob!

well Jacob, now you've done it, gone and made Ginsberg give you a thousand "finger snaps" and laugh at your lying dead on the ground floor. Hell, I had to join in on the "snaps" and pick you up and ask about including Steinbeck in your poem. Who by the way, flew open those drapes and made everyone look at the mess the world has become. Ironic isn't it that both Ginsberg and Steinbeck railed against apathy, forced people to look at what was going on, look at the dead corpses scattered throughout society, to dig deeper into the causes. But of course to get "ahead" in America means closing your eyes to these horrors. Ironic because the distance between the top floor and the ground floor is longer and the "pool of shame" (apathy) greater than ever before.
