Up

Up

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Up

elegant in apathy

the finest fracture

of sympathy

stern empathy

rises from the 'have to"

While the 'want to'

is forbidden

as a prelude

to upgrade

While social status

stirs the drink

for the indigent

middle-class.

Conclusive proof that it's those flippin' Jones' that were all trying to keep up with to blame for all of life's ills.
Any working class people scoff and mock the middle classes but do we all secretly want to be them? I'm sure a high majority would, so that they could waste money on gazebos and cars only to try and impress their neighbours who they don't like and it will most likely be reciprocal.
But hey, at least they keep the economy going with all their frivolous purchases and dinner parties in an eternal game of one-upmanship.
They do have empathy though, just as long as there's a good story to tell the neighbours in it! 😃

This is powerful. I can see how it explores themes of societal expectations versus personal desires. The imagery is striking, especially with the contrast between "have to" and "want to". You convey a lot with few words.

sir, this poem should be hung in front of the houses of politicians. or the terribly rich who cause class discrimination. there is nothing to say about the subject its obvious and clear and i am not someone who can comment on your writing style but let me not keep it to myself; i loved it, you wrote it very well (as usual, we were not surprised). wow i am amazed (again)

Hi jacob,
Its worthless to talk. A severe punishment must be imposed. Because you speak like a dog in human form. Just because you are human it doesnt say you hav free will to bark.

No human is dog at your bottom.

Everyone will payback. If not collected you think its not your mistake.

Hitler killed many in gas chamber but god will do mass killing like covid. When you cant take good on your tongue better that tongue be cut out. No more teaching only action.

it is interesting(?) how social status has at its foundation, especially for those who are seeking an "upgrade", "apathy". you lose your humanity when you go for, as the Rapper, 50 Cent sang, "get rich or die trying". we live in a culturally depraved society Jacob, where even the "have to" is lost in the rubble of apathy and status. Where "have to" is turned into a survival mode. Perhaps the new saying should be "be apathetic or die".

One thing for sure Jacob, your poems "stir my drink of resistance", thank you.
