The last line, of the last stanza, is really sad..
...
It's like he doesn't know what to believe in anymore.
It's like he doesn't even know if he believes he the words, he wants to express, anymore.
As humans, poets or otherwise, we are angry at many things. Mostly, the way the world is going or for personal reasons, but we shout out our anger. We communicate our displeasure in words, written or spoken. Sometimes, we speak too soon, our anger misplaced, because we have discovered the truth of what is happening. BUT, and this is a big BUT, mostly, we must never fail to express them. We have a responsibility to learn the truth, to speak, and to act on it. Those "peaceful hearts" need to be shattered/awakened, and isn't this what art should do? Not as diatribe, but as reality, in all its wonder and its horrors. There is this quote that I heard once, "the truth will not make you free; but you cannot get free without the truth."
I guess I went way beyond what your poem was saying Jacob, but then this is me and hopefully, there is no diatribe in these words.

You never know what a writer will tackle. We hardly know ourselves. Sometimes it's like playing dress up we look through the closet to give a new expression a go (or possibly stick to a old familiar one).
