A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

a place setting

16 candles
4 burnt tires
a road taken
skid marks on a cake
not eaten

frosting over a young grave
butter cream memories
of a life
and an unused
dessert fork

Little one can say about such a tragic happening, Jacob. This has to be true, my friend.

You take me back to a time that itself was paradox, less troubling yet more troubling simultaneously, a time when someone left a cake out in the rain and the sweet green icing’s flowing down and I’ll never have that recipe again.

I seem to recall an old song called "16 Candles." What we have here, I believe, is a comment on a loss that occurred too early. The poem sounds like a recollection of something that actually happened. It may have occurred at this time of year, and that is what sparked the memory.

ouch that smack in the face hurt :( for some reason your title didn't saturate my thick head until after I read the lines! I was on Facebook and a picture popped up of a special Thanksgiving meal I made for my stepmother when she was in hospice and of course I kept seeing that image all thru this thanksgiving. this one kind of hit home for me brother Jacob

Someone still thought of dearly at the Thanksgiving table. A little brevity which stretches into a story. Has a lovely soft femine feel to the lines. Sixteen years, is a young life cut short. The burnt tires hurt. I saw the flames, fierce and then candles flickering. Beautiful poetry J tinctured with an ongoing sadness.
