Metaphorically Abhorrent

Metaphorically Abhorrent

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Metaphorically Abhorrent

everything is a damned metaphor

I want to think in literal terms

to see it, paint it in words

as is

nothing hidden

nothing fanciful

nothing between the lines

above or below what is written

inside out or outside in

it is what it is

not even a simile

could smile my affections

from plain sight

everything is a damned metaphor

a figurative trap

I want to free my pen

before it can adapt

to its captivity

it is what it is

I am what I am

unless I,

too,

am a metaphor.

Oh Jacob!
Like you said “ it what it is”
I love metaphors….they bring a certain spice to any creative piece.
I bet you can’t escape it, hard as you might try.

You’re welcome Jacob
everything is a damned metaphor ….you set the tone and I laughed. Sometimes it is nice to travel and get lost in poetry. Metaphors allow travel. I like that freedom to travel, you don’t always want to take the easy route. I like the journey you take me on j.

Eerin,
What a nice figure of speach you cut when you wear your poet suit!

should we just be straightforward and real, no comparisons or symbolism

Maybe, Tumi, maybe.
thanks for the visit and question.

Wow. Not sure my vocabulary can do this one justice. Yes, sometimes we want to cut right to the point, but "Damn" doesn't make much of a poem. Well done. ~Jim

Yes, kind of boring without some figurative language, eh?
thanks, Jim.
sometimes all we have is metaphor. People, too may people don't hear us or want to hear us when we speak plainly. I like to think of metaphor as a weapon, a double edged sword that strikes twice. First as a message hidden and then as an edge that draws blood when the metaphor sinks in. But you as a metaphor??!! Never! You use metaphor but as a poet of conscience, someone who sees the world in flames and worries about its direction, Jacob, that's not metaphor, that's reality and plain speaking. In many ways, as poets, we have a responsibility to tell people the truth even if they don't want to hear it. We do this in artistic form with metaphor as one of our tools. And I don't think I'm alone in appreciating how and what you write. Perhaps you could end your poem with, I am what I am, a human(e) being, in love with metaphor.

Thank you for your encouraging words, Curt.
appreciate you,
j.
Just when you're looking for less metaphors in your writing, you go trip right over one and only then does it come to you that you may have been the metaphor all along!
So it is what it is and you are what you are, unless you too are a metaphor, in which case, does that mean that it is what it isn't is the case?
Brilliant Jacob. This fair made me smile, which isn't easy when it's minus 3 degrees. My damn cheeks cracked and near shattered!
