the in-between magic

the in-between magic

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the in-between magic

October clouds

are colder than August's

they look the same

like identical twins

but inside the rain is colder

hearts begin to frost

and yet they smile

warmer than a hot summer's breeze

dandelions die fast

with the approaching winter

but meanwhile the maple leaves

sit under those October clouds

doused with that cold rain

changing colors significantly

and then grasping for security

as the wind whisks them away

and August becomes a distant memory.

it's all beautiful death.

Love the title of this poem, J... You have captured the difference weatherwise between August (the first month of Autumn in Ireland) and October the third and final month in Autumn superbly. I love how you depict death in various ways through excellent word choice and depiction and how beautiful it can be depending on how we choose to see it. Lovely captivating write! Thank you for sharing, J...

A wonderful metaphor of how death takes us all but in different ways and the beauty of it should one choose to look at that side of the coin.

Thank you, Jim....
You bottled up the season for us all to enjoy. I really appreciate that. I'll be able to give this another read during a distant time of year when I'm missing Fall and be taken right back to October.

October is the best month...Thank you, Cowboy.

An age old theme made fresh with surprising and disarming imagery - colder clouds, dandelions that die fast, identical twins in nature. We accept that hearts can frost and at the same time smile, a contradiction that makes way for the poem's unsettling but accepted conclusion. In that liminal space between one season and another, we can find magic.

Thank you for your perceptions of this piece, John,

Your words create the near truth in true poetry, jacob. However one looks at the season there are colours, shadows, reflections and memories to gaze at: that in itself creates miniature marvels and memories. You have laid them in your own way above - sensitively and superbly.

Spoken like a true Scotsman Sir, where even breathing in too deeply feels like your air-con is set too low.
Even the sun feels too bright for the hear we receive from it in October, but the colours and images are maybe the only reason I can think of that we don't hibernate like the bears.

An Autumnal poem full of meaning and metaphors; the death and rebirth are God's way of changing things, moving things, recycling things, sharing things.
Your poems are enjoyable in any season.
