it's vital

Trump and Taylor
in a tree
S-i-n-g-i-n-g

it is a disturbed musical influence

love is a scratch that makes
a record play smoothly
despite its defect

but the song is skipping
love is a draining campaign
of lies and derelict lyrics

the cats are crawling
around the feet of democracy
but the purring has stopped
the claws are extended

someone is chopping at the tree
God's hand is extended

leaves are September's change
in October mist
the vision is clouded

we need to help write new songs
maybe they can harmonize
in another life

maybe families can find concurrent grooves
without smashing the vinyl purpose of peace

respect is a repetitious note
as the record ends
maybe we can play it again

and all dance to it
together.

I don't want to get emotionally involved in it all anymore. It's too much to handle. Our economy sucks, the border is going to be a problem in years to come in ways we never anticipated, and so on....

I don't like either candidate. I'd rather listen to James and try to get past all the crap coming.

What we need is the rejuvenation of old morals,
actual morals,
things like respect, dignity, humility, and kindness,
overall common decency,
which is no longer common, but it used to be.

It is both rare and endangered.

When you lift up the devil, or yourself, more than you lift up God. You are sure to fall.

It may not be immediate. It may even be a long lived success, but you are sure to fall, and fall hard....
and falling are we...
as a country,
as a planet.

Amen. (it just felt right).

Yes, I would say so, light,

Without initially speaking to the excellence of the poem itself I think its important that we in the democracies start voting for polices and ideas not personalities.
Why do we think that if we call the other names we have won the argument? This is not politics. Or perhaps it is twenty first century.

It seems to be the new politics.

That is the trouble. It is not politics it is cult worship.
Erin,
All of Western Civilization has fallen to new lows in every sense of the word. We have become a Philistine culture. While I was growing up, everyone knew about Frost, Sandburg, cummings, Steinbeck, Faulkner, Bradbury, Picasso, Dali, Rothko, Nietzsche, Sartre, Leonard Bernstein, or Stravinski, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and plenty of others who were ALIVE, and were given the proper attention and study... WHO is out there today making a cultural impact? Who is writing about the human condition in the twenty-first century? It is no wonder our politicians are evil buffoons, they are exactly what we deserve, they are exactly what we want.
(I SO hope we're wrong, and there is a way back!)

Bob DeNiro says the world will end if Trump EVER gets elected. Elon Musk informed Bob that Trump had already been president and didn't do a very bad job at promoting peace in the middle east as well as securing our borders here at home. I wouldn't vote for Kamala as a kindergarten teacher even though she speaks like one with her sing-song condescension. She said in an ad that there were no American troops in combat zones anywhere in the world. A group of Marines posted a clip of themselves in a combat zone asking where she thought they were. I wouldn't trust her as a Brownie Scout leader, let alone, Commander in Chief. I'm not overly fond of "The Donald" but I'll take him over Kamala 100 times out of a hundred.

A great way to portray the political scene! Trump and Taylor should stay in that tree, perhaps even making nice! I love the skipping vinyl record ( like Trumps hideous speech…… if only we could listen to Frank Sinatra! Lucky you in Australia!

Mr. Trump and Ms Swift singing a duet in a tree is a difficult image to summon, but as unity and harmony are your themes here, I suppose it is possible. You have an abundance of images in this one, showing both the difficulty we face and the necessity of overcoming it. The cats really are crawling around the feet of democracy, and we do need to write new songs. Maybe we can. Still, my uncertainty is not yet abated.
