Culture Shock

Culture Shock

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Culture Shock

tender baby's breath
little flowers assume existence
rain quenches, nurtures birth
they open themselves to the cruelty
unable to reinsert into the womb
life's drought dries up their logic
before they are old enough to acquire

the dire need for acceptance
only an empty garden
of desire

and one lone bloom
in a partial room
struggling to survive
faith, an elusive green thumb.

I have to catch myself at times before becoming too cynical towards Generation Z's or those born between 1997 and 2012. But with that said Gen Z's need for acceptance is, oftentimes, openly displayed by their unwillingness to pay attention to or take cognizance of the world around them. The events of this world require respectful treatment. Otherwise, poetry no longer has the merit it deserves and can only 'notify' instead of inspire. I don't own a cell phone and have never texted another human a second of my life. But no need to worry. A new Plath has yet to be born. And I refuse to be shocked any longer by the trifle nothingness of Social Media tally. Your poems bring us back to the beginning my friend. When the world was a easy place to walk through. dana.

I really appreciate this review, Dana.
I hate cell phones because of what you said here.

We keep seeing culture shocks that come with birth when we (and you in the States, I assume) see babies in TV dramas (quite often done so well). I've found the thoughts here quite gripping.

thank you for your kind words, Andrew,

It certainly can be a culture shock growing up in today!s world. Moving from the innocence of childhood days to what comes next. Some are just not strong enough to be able to deal with it. They struggle to survive. A moving write dear J.

Many shocks in life since birth; many harsh realities await the new born into this crazy world. Then they have to navigate the many obstacles to survive.
Wow!

Thank you, Thomas,

This one tells the truth for many..Born innocent into a harsh existence, they go through their lives seeking the world's acceptance in vain. The last verse is essential. Faith is the only thing that keeps many going.

How can so called Shepherds of a Flock of Sheep guide their newly acquired Robots to endure the neglect of heart and soul... knowing that they in their Ivory Towers will someday Decay. Gather your Rosebuds while you may with Baby's Breath where teardrops reflect the power of the knife in the Womb. Amen ... a poet in the gloom...
