A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

It's 2024

cell phones buzz
words on a screen
occupy minds
with shallow recesses

a world in text messaging
where are you?
what are you doing?
Not watching the news
boring
that's for old people

meet you at the bar.
we will discuss the next party

not democratic or republican
not assassination attempts
or elections

I vote for Budweiser for the keg
let's sleep it off afterwards

and maybe tomorrow when we wake
we will be graduating to real life
and understand the technical bubble
we have lived in all these years

do I really want to be an adult?
I'll text you my answer
in a minute.

I tried to write a time capsule piece in 2023, based on the News of that day. It wasn't really all that good....but it said alot..mostly on my own personal opinion of the whole thing.
Most of it, that day, was based around the border.
It was about crime, drugs, and all of the problems that they have brought over with them.
I was asking, and pondering that all of Americans were asking themselves the same questions.
What do we do about this situation??
Do we send them all back, if that's even possible?
Do we crush their hopes and dreams?
Do we have compassion and mercy on them? Is there a way to be human about this whole thing without losing our senses all together?

How does God play into this situation? Would he have an opinion on the border???
or Would he say the hell with them and throw them all out??
Would he tell us that that was the wise thing to do?

After all, we would have crime and drugs, anyway,
but it does lend to the problem and make it worse.

Anyway, that's just what I thought.
I'm sorry for the rambling.

We live in the age of technology. There is a vast difference between the views of those who were born into this wonderful age and those who survived without it growing up. Each to their own. In spite of my age, I love technology, Jacob. Couldn't live without my computer, smartphone and tablet. Each May I change my smartphone and tablet for the new upgraded latest one and I enjoy them to the full until the following year arrives and I upgrade and update to new ones again. I am hoping AI won't take over though, that would be the ruination of mankind, Jacob! Grateful for what I have. Exquisite penning! Thank you for sharing, dear poet. Enjoyed reading very much...

it sure is. truth is stranger than fiction. nice satire. cell phones, deliveries at home. what next - artificial intelligence will do the thinking for us. the only thing left will be to tap a keg and take a seat.

It does seem that a TikTok video or a meme occupies a lot more of the world's attention than the evening news. ~Jim

I do own a cellphone ... for emergencies when travelling otherwise seldom touch it. So much has changed.
Even though we think of the 50's and 60's as a quieter time, I think there was more going on than we realize. Yeah, rotary phones or maybe a party line ... juke boxes on diner tables ... black and white TV's with rabbit ears ... cars and homes without air-conditioning.
Keep thinking of my grandad who came of age before TV or airplanes or indoor plumbing and comparing it to today. Could the kids of today handle that any better than we handle the new technology ?
Would be interesting to find out.

Good one j.

I think if you asked an early teen to describe the features of their mum, dad or siblings they would struggle terribly. However if you blindfolded them.and asked them to write a 15 line text it would be a breeze.
Most teens have a prison pallor, a greyish tinge to their skin from sitting behind closed curtains glued to screens only seeing the light of day when forced. Dracula would be impressed.
Hope you are well Jacob

We are almost artificial in communication, programmed to use technology devoid of any human warmth.

The shallow mockeries of modern life writ large in this fine piece. Imagine what it was like when people relied entirely on the Mail for their communications. Excellent ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
