even they weep

even they weep

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

even they weep

the hound dog
parlays a sly smile
behind its real expression

maybe the sadness is imagined
maybe the scent he fears
are his own dreams

and the kamakazi feeling
he has on waking,
sounding one last cry

for his lost love.

Ever watch them paw the air in their sleep? I used to say my dog was chasing rabbits in his dreams. And it might well have been. He so loved to chase the bunnies. I've never owned a hound but I've been friends with a few. Good dogs. I enjoyed. F.

Yes, and it is pretty funny...
Thank you, Fabian...

So much sibilance scattered through this and it reads beautifully. ~Jim

I do not have words for how profoundly satisfying your words are.
The meter is what gets me.
The inner rhyming and lilt.
I enjoy it.
More with less
For sale: baby shoes, never worn
You encapsulate this method of writing
I wonder if I am waking up to merely crash down, sometimes.

"A sly smile behind real expression, maybe sadness is imagined."

Wow! As always Jacob you have a knack at capturing the essence of feeling behind the words. Yes I have heard this howl and it sends shivers down the spine. A howl of grief so deep pain so sharp that it cuts to the bone. Not even the widow's shriek is as deep. Love your wording and pacing they make all the difference. Congratulations on another masterpiece
