A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

minimalist poetry

in the softness of vulnerability

she advanced a hard smile

shadowing her weakness

for him,

eloquently denying

the plausibility of love.

My favorite poetry is that which does not waste a word, where the weight is felt through each line to the end. This work is literary space well spent. Contrasting the soft vulnerability with the hard smile expresses the ruined moment with both efficiency and elegance all on its own.

Plausible denial. Sounds like an old CIA practice. The person spoken of here uses it to hide her "weakness" for another. What she is actually denying is herself.

How sad to deny the existence of feelings. I pondered on the why’s. This poem is beautifully conveyed J. So much said in so few words.

Ken,
How many times, do you suppose, La Belle Dame Sans Merci has been cloned? "Her hair was long, her foot was light, And her eyes were wild."

Denials are hard to swallow or fathom; our minds need clues, our selves need assurances.
Short, powerful, meaningful poem.
