the semantics of being

the semantics of being

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the semantics of being

as the distance expanded itself

the we became me

and the you departed

the us a little engine

leaking oil

a cigarette out on the porch

you inside on a cell

lamenting to a friend

the miles became the we

driven away by two pronouns

that were never quite able

to replace the nouns

that once loved

being in a sentence together

as compound subjects.

and it really happened that way, Julie,
thank you
j.
When you replace the nouns, love becomes sort of an abstract notion for it takes 2 to tango, to travel the distance, to win the race to the finish line.
I see Nascar poet/lover going round and round in circles, while the spectators wish he does not crash.
I love it!

Hehehe! You are welcome sir Jacob.
It just wasn’t a life sentence hence the breakdown. These days it doesn’t take much, we are forever changing and distance can start from the most smallest thing. Love the title, great read J. Another fav of yours.
