Reading through the Blur

Reading through the Blur

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Reading through the Blur

alone is a menu

with the appetizers missing

the entrees overcooked

and the drinks coming too fluently

until the verbiage is so high

the credit card is rejected

and love is confiscated

for dessert, more tears

and the backseat of the taxi

is so vast with no companion

to share the fare

just empty air,

 the ghost ride

into a concrete cold sunset

A beautiful capture of the absent appetizers. This reminds me of the song "Tom's Diner". As always, brilliant.

I think now they are...Checkered Cabs a thing of the past.
I love the imagery, it conjures such a profound, visceral response -- recognition and empathy.

I don’t like the place or the menu, the lack of it stinks. I see him sitting alone, all the empty glasses lined up. Loneliness is a killer. So unkind on the spirit. I want to talk to him .

I do think chefs keep their most experimental fare for the lone diner Jacob, having had to recently ask the waiter if it was animal, vegetable or mineral I was "being expirimented with."
I've even been tempted to ask the lone diner if they'd like to join us instead, but having previously ate in waggamamas, where they just sit you next to strangers anyway has always put me off when my head starts thinking of possible newspaper headlines on my demise.
And who knows, maybe after five menutes putting up with me, they'd be asking for their table for one back anyway. 😊
Although the way some people treat lone diners makes me wonder if they think lone diners should eat take out every night.
A handy hint is to just stare back at them, unblinking. They'll never look your way again. 😊
