the last blue sky

the last blue sky

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the last blue sky
precipitation of memory
the rain falls, thoughts hit the ground
and splash into fragments
he held the sun once
his grip was solid
and extenuating
a circumstance the mind entrapped
now he let go
the umbrella, as he opened
needful things spilled out
his soaked failings
so evident in puddles
of triumph for what he could remember
there was light through the blinds
still, as his grip suffered
something shed
something dead
he just sat there staring out the window of time
his befuddled recollections
teardrops falling against the pane.

When I worked in hospice the patients were encouraged by the social workers to do a “life review”; I’m not so certain that is always a good idea. That’s how I heard this poem as well.

The last blue sky is Stormy in
My mind… it begins with a Breeze in the trees.. and then the dear drops on the Window pane… your poetry is a 💗 lovely reading that gives me a perspective of Angel Wings… gently, Pat

This has such a pervasive sadness inundating the entirety of the poem. It's a morose and depressive feeling of anxiety and uncertainty tinged with the regret of realization. You handle the nuance expertly with a deft hand and heart. The nostalgic sense of loss is palpable. I applaud the craft put into this. I'd say I enjoyed but that somehow seems off the mark here. But it was very moving. F. Well done.

I appreciate your kind words, Fabian,

The last blue sky for someone special, is certainly enough to set the rain in motion. The memories are a blessing, even though they can be painful. A sad poem but one of great beauty dear J.

Beautifully sad, jacob: a strong thread of life past, slowly weakening yet showing the creations and abilities of a life full of colour and achievement, love and far, far more. Bravo, sir.

This is sadly beautiful, Jacob. Those recollections are beautiful reflections of a life lived long enough to look back on.
