Robert and the Drive

Robert and the Drive

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Robert and the Drive

Robert Creeley spoke to me in a dream

he said "watch where you are driving for Chrissake"

but I couldn't steer the bed

so I fell back to sleep

putting the imaginary car

on "auto-pilot"

listening to Robert recite some poems

from back when he could still see

his own road, with his one eye

and keen sense of pen.

This is very engaging, particularly the line "with his one eye and a keen sense of pen." Great dream, too. :)

You have such vivid dreams, dear Jacob. I have them too. Lately, beginning this year, I've begun experiencing a strange phenomenon. I see totally unknown people in my sleep. People I've never met before and there they're absolutely as normal, everyday individuals interacting with me.

I love this wonderful, humor filled tribute. Especially the following lines:

"but I couldn't steer the bed
so I fell back to sleep
putting the imaginary car
on "auto-pilot"

I wish I could write like this.....And thanks for sharing another great poet for me to look at and read of.

I never Heard of Robert Creely, until now. I decided to google him, and man, is his poetry interesting! Thanks for conveniently leading me to learning more about great poems and poets, J. As for the poem itself, I really like the way you made its complex meaning understandible through simple, almost free verse-like sections. I can definitiely understand why you adore his work. ',:3

lovely poem J. Creeley would have enjoyed it immensely i think. always thought of him as Ginsberg without the drama :)

Ginsberg without the drama...that fits perfectly...

Creeley wrote "poetry has no purpose" but I think it's like life and has as much purpose as we give it. The meaning of life is the meaning we give it. I understand that he wants nothing concrete and immovable in meaning but in my perception even the most adventurous ships must carry anchors. Great piece.
